Morgan State Lacrosse – Help Fund The Bears!

The Morgan State Lacrosse Club is an organization that fights to uphold the tradition of Black College lacrosse at Morgan State University. Every season is a written page in the history of lacrosse in the black colleges, and we need your help to keep the history here at Morgan State truly traditional and rich, as we expand.

Here is a Project Description:

Every season, we have several young minds that are interested and molded into the lacrosse community through our program. As a prime example, I had no clue how to throw a ball my freshman year at Morgan, but I learned. Fortunately, as a senior on the team, I run our defense and teach new young players like those who taught me.

Our goal is to bring our students into the world of lacrosse, and give them the experience that NCAA athletes have, only in the form of an athletic club. Last year, Morgan State was blessed to compete at the Lacrosse Day tournament in Hampton, Virginia. We have several memories from those days, including meeting the Bratton Brothers, one of the biggest names in modern day lacrosse.

Unfortunately, a lot of our players (and potential recruits) suffer from the lack of the funds for the game. This situation leads to them being less active, quitting, or not even being interested. It is hard to keep the legacy of the Ten Bears alive here at Morgan State without the financial support like other organizations on campus, which is why we need your help!

With your contributions to our fundraiser powered by our friends at Lacrosse All Stars, you will help us continue to grow and remain one of the few active Black Colleges lacrosse clubs in the nation. Your contributions will also prove that there is a home for lacrosse in Black Colleges.

This is what YOUR Contributions could help pay for:

• Referee Fees for home games ($375/ Game)

As one of the few HBCU’s to have a lacrosse club, there would be nothing better than to have a home game in front of the student-body and faculty of Morgan State. Unfortunately, things aren’t quite that easy. As an NCLL team, we must have referees to monitor the games. Refs are not cheap, we have to have three of them, and each of them gets $125. Your funds will help us pay for these refs; giving us the chance to schedule more big games in our stadium.

• Transportation ($630 for a school bus per game/ $700 for coach)

Transportation will be an important factor for our season this year. In the past, we were able to car-pool to games. Now that we have young faces playing this season, it will be a challenge to pay for transportation. Especially if we want to participate in Lacrosse Day 2013 in Hampton. We are planning to travel using the normal school bus for our normal games, but for Lacrosse Day, we will have to ride in a coach bus to travel over states.

• Lacrosse Equipment (Helmets $150 Each x 30)

Lacrosse is no cheap sport. Equipment is one of the reasons why interested players are discouraged from giving lacrosse a try here at Morgan. When players do attempt to acquire equipment, instead of getting a safe helmet like a Pro-7or CPX-R, our players have to buy makeshift equipment that even some of the Ten Bears probably used in the 1970’s. Your donations help us purchase new equipment so new players can join, and our vets can lead the team safely. We want to start out by purchasing new helmets, and hopefully move on to buying full sets equipment in the future.

• Uniforms ($1500 = Jerseys from ProAthletics)

There are many rules in lacrosse, but there is one unwritten rule that most lax players live by: You look good, you play good. Morgan Lacrosse is halfway there. Thanks to our friends at Kelly & Associates, we have shorts that make heads turn. Unfortunately, we have pennies for jerseys. If we are going to upgrade our team, we need to upgrade our look. The pennies are starting to acquire a lot of damage also from games. For example, my jersey is about to split into two! The donations will help us purchase jerseys for the season.

There are also Rewards for your contribution to the Morgan Lacrosse Club. We are an organization that wants to give back to those who have given so much to us. The more you contribute to us, the more rewards given to you.

Here are the Reward Details for contributions:

$10 gift – Morgan State Sticker. This is going to be THE sticker to have!

$25 gift - Morgan State Sticker and Team Photo

$50 gift - Morgan State T-shirt, Sticker and Team Photo

$100 gift - 2013 Highlight DVD, T-shirt, Sticker and Photo

$500 gift - “Ten Bears” Fundraiser Honoree, Highlight DVD, T-Shirt, Sticker, and Photo

$1000 gift -“Ten Bears” Fundraiser Honoree, Travel to HBCU national championships with MSU lacrosse from Baltimore

$2000 gift -“Ten Bears” Fundraiser Honoree, Your name or company name on our new jerseys

In conclusion, Morgan Lacrosse is setting the standard not only for HBCU lacrosse, but for intramural sports at HBCU’s in general. We are the only recreational sports organization active on our campus, and the 2013 season will prove whether the school can expand through recreational and intramural sports.

Your donations will help us keep the Ten Bears legacy alive here at Morgan State University. The 2013 Season will start in early February, so our project will run until March 15th, giving us just a month to reach our goal. We will release our lacrosse schedule soon. Lacrosse All Stars will be the first to have our official schedule.

This is important, and we need to rally the old Lacrosse heads to help make this work.

  3. I support growing the game across all HBCUs–we need to instill the long-term benefits of learning and playing this game–that will always been known as “The Creator’s Game”!!    Best Wishes for Continued Success–Verina Mathis-Crawford
